Evening Talk: Secure Yourself Online – Thursday 21st May 2015 @ 7pm

insecure_passwordOn Thursday 21st at 7pm our very own jester`, Martin Mitchell or @jayester depending on the circles you run in, will be speaking about some best practices of securing yourself on-line :

Whether you are a creator or user of on-line content, knowing how to secure yourself on-line is important. In a world that is becoming more and more digital, we are ever growing our digital footprint. During the talk we will go through a top 10 best security practices, and maybe a few more too boot. It will relevant to you whether your on a laptop, or smart device, getting on-line for work or personal. You only need to be compromised once for an nefarious individual to make for life awkward. Their intention may be for fun or profit, but I will give you the information to protect yourself on-line.

I shall cover a lot but it will touch on passwords, email, encryption, tracking and wireless just to name a few. Aimed at everyone from general viewers of cat videos, those of you that have compromised, to those that would like to become a little bit more paranoid on-line.

January Talks; Computer Games Development Night


Ever wonder what goes into making a computer game? Well, we have a night of talks to suit you! Computer Games Development Night will feature a variety of talks from professionals in the computer games industry, covering topics like development processes and behing-the-scenes tools that make your games enjoyable.

And for some variety we’ll have a few short talks about projects people are working on, a sort of show-and-tell.

Talk: Biomaterials, Biotechnology, and perceived ownership of a human body

This Saturday (June 16th) from 6.30pm we are honoured to be hosting a talk by Dr Muireann Quigley on biomaterials, biotechnology, perceived ownership of the human body and the changing role of the body. Dr Quigley is a lecturer in Bioethics at the University of Manchester, and has published papers on this topic, including “Property in the body: Separating persons and things.”

This talk is just the latest in a series of talks from the Dublin Skeptics in the Pub (SITP) group. You can find out more about them through their twitter and their website. More details on this talk are available via their facebook or googleplus.

The talk is free, and there’s no need to register beforehand. But with such an interesting topic you won’t want to arrive late!

Open Social with Tunes

 

This weekends Open Social will have a bit of a twist. There will be some live music to go along with the usually good mix of food, drinks and chat.

The social will kick off at 7pm this Saturday the 2nd of July until late. Feel  free to bring your own beer and food along.  It’s a great chance to visit the space and see what we are all about.This event is free and open to the public.

Dan a member of Tog will be giving an update on the great work being done at  Cloughjordan, a new eco village, located in Tipperary.

Cloughjordan is a new concept in living. With Fibre Optic Internet to
every home, communal heating system, low energy concept housing, and a hackers dream, a fab-lab with laser cutter and a shop bot robotic machine. The fab-lab is still in construction with the foundations laid. Dan visited the village as part of the food festival and will explain how the village works and how they need help from hackers to get the best of technology to drive the economy.

After the talk we will have a set from Ewan from Boy Scout Audio http://boyscoutaudio.com/.  Restricted to a mere 16 notes per pattern and 16 patterns per track, he squeezes the last drops of musical juice from a Nintendo DS, battering the synthesised daylights out of the bare-bones Korg DS-10 software that is the sole sound of his music. Csixtyforce and Zyme from Gamepak have also been added to the line up. Bring on the chip tunes.

Open Source : A philosophy for Life talk & Open Social Night

On Saturday 6th of November, we are delighted to have John Looney from Google give a passionate talk about Open Source : A philosophy for Life. This talk also coincides with our normal lively Open Social nights. These nights are a great chance to come and meet the members of TOG and have a bit of fun. BYOB. The night kicks off at 7pm. All welcome.

After many years working in Google, John Looney realised that there were strong correlations between the way Google works internally, and the way the Open Source community works. It’s allow Google to stay reasonably flexible, despite growing it’s engineering teams past 10,000. In this talk, John examines various aspects of Open Source culture and how they can be mapped to a large organisation. This talk would be interesting to anyone who is curious how open source has managed to deliver such a stunning array of impactful projects and how large organisations can function efficiently. There will also be some discussion on how such culture that is certainly not unique to Google Engineering.
