Christmas Crafting at Tog

Now that it’s December, we can officially discuss Christmas in public!  As always, there’s plenty of crafting to do for the season.  On Saturday the 8th, Tríona will be running a crocheted baubles workshop and on Tuesday 11th will be the final craft night of the year (sadly, we won’t be meeting on the 25th, nobody’s available for some reason…).

The crochet workshop will run from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday 8th of December.  No prior crocheting experience is required, all levels will be welcome.  During the workshop you will learn very basic crochet skills to create a beautiful net to go around a bauble to hang on the tree.   The workshop will cost €2 for members and €7 for non-members.  Spaces are limited, so sign up below if you can make it.

Last Christmas, our final Craft Night of the year was a sugar fuelled craft fest, and this year will be no different.  Crafting will occur as usual on the night but we’ll be making biscuits and hot chocolate to help the panicked-Christmas-is-here-and-Ive-no-presents-ready frantic making.  Feel free to bring some baked goodies of your own, it’s a busy night and we have lots of sugar loving crafters!  The night will start earlier than normal at 6pm and will most likely run later than normal (later than 9pm anyway).    To keep an eye on the plans for this special Craft Night and for details on future craft nights, you can sign up to the mailing list here.

ggplot2 workshop

ggplot2 is the renowned R package used for high quality data visualization.

ggplot2 simplifies many of the details of creating statistical graphics while using the power of the underlying R graphics system to ensure those graphics are both beautiful and meaningful. The class will focus on how to produce many commonly used graphical procedures (histograms, scatterplots, bar charts), and how to enhance those plots according to the user’s wishes.

Attendees will require some basic knowledge of R (i.e. getting your data into R), but ggplot2 is a mini-language specifically tailored for producing graphics, and that will be the focus of the class. (See syntax example.) This workshop is run in conjunction with Dublin R.

When? Tuesday,  October 23rd from 19:30 till 21:30
Cost: €5 for non-members, free for members

R workshop (repeat)

Once again, the last R workshop turned out to be very popular and Kevin kindly agreed to teach another one! If you missed out on the last one, here’s your chance.

Since its inception, R has become one of the preeminent programs for statistical computing and data analysis. The ready availability of R, along with a wide variety of associated packages, marks it as an excellent choice for a multitude of computing tasks related to statistics and data science.

The workshop will introduce delegates to computing in the R environment; including data objects, basic calculations and using help, then progressing to some of the core features of R: vectorization, subscripting, and the some of the functions in R that are provided for common data management tasks.

As the workshop is intended to complement forthcoming Coursera statistics classes, very little statistical knowledge is expected.

The class will also include a short presentation from a developer who uses R professionally.

When? Saturday, September 29th, from 10:30 till around 15:30 (with breaks!)
Cost: €8 for non-members, free for members

Please use the form below the cut to sign up. Updated to add: we’re full! You can still sign up to be added to the waiting list.

Irish Hackerspaces Week 2012

Irish Hackerspace Week 2012 Logo
Irish Hackerspace Week 2012

This year Irish Hackerspaces Week falls between September 15th – 23rd. This gives hackerspaces around Ireland a chance to expand their reach in to the local community.

TOG has already started to get events ready for this week. Sept 15th and 16th is the Synchronous Hackathon weekend which is a great weekend to get people aware of that can happen in a hackerspace. Our usual Open Social is on the 15th to kick off the whole weekend. We also have a yearly quiz on the last weekend ( Saturday 22nd ), and get all the hackerspaces together via audio/video link with questions dished out by our very own TOG Quiz Master.

Apart from those weekend activities, during the week we are planning electronics and craft activities, a night of short talks on various topics and a Gastro Night, discussing food science and beer brewing 🙂

As the calendar for this week comes together we will be posting a schedule for all to see.

Watch this space.
