Science Hack Day Dublin

Science Hack Day DublinScience Hack Day DublinIMG_20141011_211001 (1) is a 36 hour hardware and software hackathon. A social event with creativity and love of science at its heart.  Each year it brings together coders, designers, scientists, engineers and makers simply to make interesting things. Why? For adventure, for playfulness, for science! This year the event moves to UCD on the 15th & 16th November.

Here in TOG, we have been looking forward to Science Hack Day since the last one ended. Over the past few months we have been stock piling cool hardware, boards and sensors just for two days of fun. We plan on moving most of our electronics lab to UCD to help people get making. Check out the photo to the right for some of the gear we will be bringing.

EL Wire Workshop

As halloween is drawing near, Tog will be holding an electro luminescent wire workshop this Saturday 18th October from 2pm until 5pm .  This is a great way to add a glowing element to any costume or accessory.

For €20 you will receive two metres of  precut el wire, colour can be picked and paid for on the day. Along with this there is the portable power pack, batteries included. The power back can be set to flash the el wire, turn on and off.  Guidance in soldering el wire and appending to garments on the day. The 2 meter lengths come presoldered so soldering is not neccessary unless you need to attach several wires together. For this reason it’s over 18s only.  Bring any clothing or wearables you may need to work with on the day. More el wire can be purchased if required. No pre booking required.

TOG at RUA RED Digital Week

TOG members and collaborators had three stands at RUA RED’s Digital Week. Paul ran a Learn To Solder workshop, where participants created their own “I Can Solder” LED badge

We are teaming up with Intel, Coder Dojo Girls and Coder Dojo DCU to bring about a special event for the International Day of the Girl on October 11. A day long hackathon style to give an introduction to the Galileo board. The participants will learn basics of coding an embedded environment and get hand an experience with hardware. The second half of the day will focus on creating electronic fashion  wearable technology and funky robots.

Brewday (12th July 10.30am)

Capital Brewers return to TOG this Saturday. Hearty brews are on the menu, in both brewing with guidance and instructions from the experts, and tasting craft beer made earlier!

A very rough time-line of a brew day is as follows:

  • 10:30am – 12pm: Heating water, water treatment and mashing grain
  • 12pm – 2pm: Boiling, BBQ, beer tasting from previous brews and visitors beers
  • 2pm – 4pm: Cooling and clean up

Every brew day is slightly different with a mix of brewers, recipes and techniques. This weekend we plan to brew an Irish Red Ale that is similar to O’Hara’s Red but with some improvements. We also won a mixed berry cider kit  from one of the brewing shops which we have decided to donate to TOG. We will brew the mixed berry kit and in a few weeks time bottle it using any empty beer bottles in the TOG kitchen. The cider batch should be ready for the August open social night but I will bring a large batch of red wine with me to the July open social for people to try if they want.

The long term goal would be to get a full set of brewing equipment that TOG members can use themselves at the space and make your own beer, cider or wine whenever you like! All you need are the ingredients.

Its always a fun and engaging day, the cost is free (donations are welcome) so come along, ask questions and even help with the brewing!

Capital brewers discussion is here, and pictures of our previous brewdays can be found here.

Photo Workshop Completed

Dub_CasWe completed TOG’s photo workshop today. Yesterday, just as everyone got film loaded, the rain threatened to spoil the day. It soon cleared and we all headed for Dublin Castle and environs. Despite a few minor calamities, everyone got a roll of B&W film exposed and developed. The workshop continued today with printing. Everyone got a contact print done and a chance to make some test exposures and prints.
