Can’t you feel the excitement in the air?! Dublin Maker is on this Saturday! From bitter experience we know that all the Makers will be at this entire week. And as we here at TOG are a caring bunch, we’ll be holding our traditionalpost-Dublin-Maker BBQ (now with added pizza!) on Sunday, 26th July, from 2pm-5pm.
It will be a chance for the Makers to unwind in an understanding and supportive environment. But it’s not just an event for official Dublin Makers! Now is a great opportunity to finally take a look around TOG, or to get to know our members better. It’s a chance for anyone, and everyone, to chill out with some interesting people, who do interesting things, while filling their bellies. So come one, come all, satisfy your curiosity, and your appetites!
Our pizza oven was built as a bit of a hack over Christmas and New Year. After 5 months of operation, a bit of maintenance and a few minor mods were in order. A better flue, some re-jigging of insulation and foil and some re-pointing of bricks were done.
On Saturday 20th June, we fired it up for our regular open social event. It all worked as good as usual and everyone got fed! We had plenty of first time visitors to TOG too, who got the grand tour of the space. They’ve been keeping in touch with us on meetup and twitter. Pics of the maintenance here.
This Saturday is our monthly Open Social. We are trying something new this month with having a talk on during the night too. We will have all the normal madness with project demo’s, beer tasting , pizza making and general chatting all round but with a short talk by Daniel Cussen.
Our doors will be open from 7pm with the talk starting at 9.30pm . The event is free and all our welcome.
Talk Title : Creating a Satellite Ground Station
Talk Description: This talk will be about the experiences of setting up a Satellite Station to talk to the International Space Station. From more information you can view an article in Echo Ireland on the project.
Every pizza joint around here knows TOG. You hardly ever have to explain to them where we are. So it was high time that we made our own pizza oven in the yard.
First we had to set some cavity blocks. There’s quite a slope on TOG’s yard so the left side was about 20mm lower than the right. The left side blocks had to be raised to compensate. After the bottom 4 blocks were set, the others were simply stacked on top. Lengths of timber, painted with bitumen paint for waterproofing, were laid across the top, Now we had a suitable platform to build on.
As the holiday season swings by, Tog will be running a present making session with help from the Dublin Favour Exchange
Day: Wed 3rd Dec
Time: 7-9pm
Cost: free — but bring some materials if you can
Where: Tog!
We will be making 4 seasonal delights:
Carrot Cake
Apple Jam
Cards
Soap
Please bring relevant materials if you can: for the card you need liquid or stick glue. We have cards and paper. Favour Exchangers will be bringing some special teabags for the cardmaking!
We have everything we need for the soapmaking but have limited spaces
As we’re well into December by now, we can talk about the C word all we want! As is tradition by now, the final craftnight of the year will be a sugar-fuelled glitterfest where we try to finish Christmas gifts while raising our blood glucose levels. By the time your insulin sorts that mess out, the crochet class on Saturday 14th will let you return to the scene of the sugarcrime and see what you recall.
Sugar craftnight kicks off from about 6:30pm in TOG on Tuesday December 10th. All are welcome, and all sorts of tasty treats are welcome too! There’ll be hot chocolate to wash down the Christmas cookies, and I’ll have some spare felt and sparkles for anyone who’d rather build decorations than destroy their pancreas (of course you can do both). Coordination of baking will happen through the craft mailing list (anyone can join the list and get regular reminders of craftnights during the year). As with all craftnights, you can just pop down on the night. Our first craftnight of 2014 will be on January 7th.
There will be a crochet bauble workshop run on the afternoon of Saturday December 14th from 2:30pm till about 4:30pm. Participants don’t need any prior experience at crochet, and will still make a pretty netted bauble for the tree. The class will cost €7 including materials (or €2 for members for the materials). Sign-up form for the class after the break.
