What’s happening in Tog in February

Open Social: We open to the general public once a month, in February it’s Saturday 16th, from 7-ish until the last one leaves. Want to know a little more about what we do? Want to join in? Come along, bring yourself, food, drink, ideas, chat.

Lock Picking: Our regular lock-picking night runs every other Monday, come along and learn how to pick a padlock. Or handcuffs, should you need. No questions asked. This month, lock-picking is on the 4th and 18th February, starting at 7 pm. Tools provided.

Craft Night: Craft night involves knitting, sewing, crochet, embroidery, CAD and 3D printing, all under one roof, all at the same time. Or anything else in the craft line that you’d like to do. Every second Wednesday, this month that’s the 6th and 20th February. 7 pm start.

Electronics and Micro Controller Night: Anything electronic, micro and hackable. All levels from beginners to experts, we have basic kits to get you started. Every Monday when there’s no lock-picking, the 11th and 25th February. Bring your own laptop. Starts at 7 pm.

Coding: Runs on the same Mondays as lock-picking, the 4th and 18th at 7pm. Come down and work on a project or help others with theirs. Laptop of your own pretty much essential, and bring your own side project.

Wikipedia Editing: is a great chance to learn how to edit Wikipedia, every last Wednesday of the month (27th February). Bring your laptop, there may be pizza! 7pm onwards.

The Science Fiction Book Club This month’s epic blockbuster is The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. It’s short. If you think too short, come and rant about it. If you think mercifully short, come and rant about it. Wednesday 27th February, 7.30 pm.

Return of the Finish-a-Thon

If you’ve been meaning to complete a project, or you have something put away somewhere that you’re going to finish someday – lucky you! That day is Saturday 15th December, from 10 in the morning until late.

All projects welcome, they don’t have to be this complicated…
We’re opening up Tog for all-comers, hackers, makers, crafters, coders, whatever you have that could do with a finishing touch and a final tweak, bring it along and we’ll supply the workspace and a bit of know-how, enthusiasm, encouragement, and breakfast.

There’s an Open Social running on the same day, so you can stay as long as you want. Small handmade trophies for finished projects. Tog, 22 Blackpitts, Dublin 8, D08 P3K4.

October 2018 Social Battery swap in electric vehicle talk

This October Social on Saturday 20th October 2018, along with the usual chat, craic and fun, we will also have an Electric vehicle theme. See this link for more details

There will also be a quick talk from Jonathan Fitzpatrick, who removed the electric vehicle battery from his 2011 car and upgraded to a 2015 pack.

He will talk about the problems he was hoping to solve, the problems he encountered (the new pack would not fit) and his eventual work arounds and success. The talk will start at 7:30pm sharp and there will be time for questions afterwards. Then you can stay and tour the TOG hackerspace and hang around for the evening. The event is free, open to all, no need to book, just drop on by.

October 2018 Open Social – Electric Vehicle Theme

At the October 2018 Social night on Saturday 20th October 2018 from 7pm we will have a normal open social night where anyone can drop by and we will have a theme of Electric Vehicles. We plan on having a few Electric Vehicle owners attend, and you can have a look around the cars, along with seeing them charge at TOG’s own electric vehicle charge point. If you are interested in Electric Vehicles or own one, this will give a non formal chance to chat to owners along with getting a tour of the TOG hackerspace, and seeing all TOG has to offer including laser cutters, 3D printers, a full workshop and more. The event and all social nights are free of charge so drop by.

Electric Vehicle Charging

Doors open at 7pm and the plan is to have a quick introduction to Electric Vehicles around 7:30. As we are a hackerspace we will also mention digging under the bonnet of electric vehicles and modification. The space will be open until after 11pm and it is a bring your own beer (BYOB) or soft drinks social night, but not if driving. There is limited free parking on site, and street parking in the area is free on a Saturday evening, although we encourage people to arrive car free or share lifts where possible.  TOG is located in Dublin City Centre here:

For those with Electric Vehicles we have a type 2 tethered charger and a 3 pin household style outdoor socket, but charging will be only for those that really need it.

For more information about TOG and future events see:

https://www.tog.ie and check out the events calendar and other blog posts. We also have all the usual

Twitter Facebook and other social media

If you have specific questions you can contact us through the website, but feel free to just drop by at one of our themed open nights.

TOG at EUCYS Dublin 2018

The EU Contest for Young Scientists comes to Dublin this September, for the second time in its near-three decade history.  The first EUCYS event was held in Brussels in 1989, with the aim of encouraging cooperation and the exchange of ideas and knowledge between young researchers, and to inspire and instil confidence in them to follow careers in science. This year’s event takes place in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin, and runs for a full five days from Friday 14th to Tuesday 18th September. It offers participants the opportunity to meet and discuss their work with some of the world’s leading scientists. TOG will be there from 10 to 4 on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th,  and from 10 to 3 on Monday 17th, showcasing our projects and activities.

EUCYS is a part of the the Science with and for Society programme run by the Research directorate of the European Commission. For venue details and a programme of events, visit the EUCYS website.
