The Creative Museum Project

The Creative Museum is a three-year project funded by Erasmus+. It ran from 2014 and comes to a close this month. It aimed to explore and inform the connections between our cultural organisations and their communities by capitalising on the emergence of new and democratising digital technologies.

We have had the great pleasure of taking part in their events over the past three years. It was great to find museum community so open and willing to meet the makers on their terms especially the Chester Beatty Library staff.  Events have ranged from talks, workshops and conferences.  It has not been just a one way street, we have had museum staff come to Science Hack Day Dublin and jump right in.  Tog has hosted events for the project such as Projection Mapping and we even had out members visit other project partners for workshops. 

The Creative Museum project has proceeded a number of great tool kits and we are incredibly proud to see some of our events be the inspiration for a number of them. You can view them all on their website. http://creative-museum.net/toolkits/

Project: Lasercut Fridge Magnets

Its been a while since this blog had some laser-cut goodness. This latest project is to create fridge magnets for a members event.  The design uses the Alpha Thin font and features a person holding some fire poi.  

After the cutting them all out of 3mm Birch Plywood, we marred them to magnets to with some glue.

 

We used Dry Erase White Magnetic Strip Roll, as we had it on hand. To glue them together  we used our new favorite glue, Mitre Fast Adhesive.

Dublin Maker 2017 Open Call

Summer is coming, that means our favorite event is only months away. Dublin Maker is community run event, which will be held on Saturday July 22nd, 2017 in Merrion Square, Dublin.  It takes the form of a festival style showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning. Now is your chance to take part, they have a call for all sorts of projects and ideas on their website.

WHO AM I Screening at the IFI

The Goethe-Institut´s regional project Fading Memories are hosting a special screening of “Who am I” by Baran bo Odar in the IFI. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion with Renate Samson, Chief Executive of Big Brother Watch (London), Una Mullally, journalist and columnist with The Irish Times and William McLoughlin from TOG Dublin Hackerspace.

Engineers Week – Night of Talks

 

 

 

 

As part of Engineers Week we are running a Night of Short Talks in TOG on Thursday 9th of  March kicking off at 7:30pm. The night will be made up of a number of talks on a range of topics. 

 

Title: Car Computer Hacking

Speaker: Daniel Cussen

Many people are afraid to meddle with their cars often due to the fear of a complicated computer running under the hood with no easy way to see what the computer is thinking or doing. We unveil the computer and show low cost interfaces and easy ways to diagnose and repair faults along with modifications and DIY servicing and upgrades. Take the fear out of automotive repair and avoid costly dealer maintenance and repair all using free apps and Bluetooth and USB interfaces. We will also discuss diesel-gate and emissions monitoring.

An overview on Google Tango technology – how it works and what applications it may have. As an example I’ll show a game I made for the Global Game Jam 2017 that uses Tango for positional tracking.

Maker Faire UK 2017

 We are off to Newcastle. \o/ . We are excited at being accepted to Maker Faire UK. This will be our 5th year showing casing at the event. Our April would just not be the same without it. 

This year the plan is to showcase a constellation umbrella made by Robert along with other members projects. If you are in Newcastle be sure to stop by on the 1st or 2nd for a duck and hackerspace stamp.
