Museums and Makers Inspiring Each Other

On Tuesday 6th March 6 – 8pm, we are teaming with the Chester Beatty Library, to put on a night that gives makers and museums people a chance to learn from each other. The night in the library, will be filled with a mix of makers from the local community and people from the arts, sciences and cultural sectors. We will be looking at how museums can provide inspiration for creativity and finding ways local maker communities can be embed in the museum’s public programmes.

This event is facilitated by Don Undeen of BoomHiFive, Georgetown University Maker Hub, and Jenny Siung, Head of Education, Chester Beatty Library, and our own Jeffrey Roe. This event is part of the Making Museum project, an 18-month EU-funded training initiative (Erasmus+ 20172019) exploring how museum staff can up-skill in creativity, innovation, creative collaborations with local maker communities, and embed these ideas in their public programmes for audiences.

Synthesizer Eurorack Modular DIY Workshop

For those of you exploring the wonderful world of Modular Synthesizers and have built or would like to build some modules to add to their system, this is the workshop for you. My name is Robin Burke and I’m part of the Berlin Modular collective that runs regular DIY workshops in Berlin. I thought “If I’m visiting home, let me bring synth gifts for my yet undiscovered modular family” 😉

If you have a lot of experience, I can bring some more advanced modules and for those of you who are dipping your toes in for the first time, there are plenty of “absolute” beginner modules like Passive Multiples for instance.
I’ll bring a range of kits that will (with the help of time, parts, solder & electricity) turn into modules from the following international manufactures:
Serge by Random Source; Bastl Instruments of Czechia; Snazzy FX from NYC and maybe even 2 kits from a local manufacturer here in Berlin called GHz Labs.

I’ll limit the number of places to 15 because of space and not being able to fly the entire Berlin Modular team over (but maybe next time 😉
The kits in principal should be built at the workshop but of course can be finished at home if you need to leave early (2hr minimum stay). The whole point is to create or strenghten a community where, amongst other things: we learn from each other; share simply let very useful tips and tools; meet people whom we may not meet otherwise and ya, have fun.

I’ll bring a system with me so modules can be fully tested and debugged if needed. There’s often a capacitor or diode put in the wrong way around but thankfully it’s often an easy fix.

So whether you’re an absolute beginner or a high priest of the soldering iron, you’re very welcome to the TOG where all the necessary tools like soldering irons with solder, braid, solder sucker for removal & wire cutters will be provided to complete a kit. Of course, feel free to bring your own irons, air extractors, solder, holders and stands with a magnifying glass, etc.

And after the workshop, we can relax to the music and sounds of a modular system or two played by myself and guests and chit chat for a while. Community is king 🙂

 

The workshop takes place on Saturday 30th of September from 11:00 to 16:00. The price of the workshop will depend on the cost of the kit selected. A full list of kits available is listed below.  

All parts, tools and instructions will be provided. Places limited to 15 participants. Note all participants must be 18 or over.

The Creative Museum Project

The Creative Museum is a three-year project funded by Erasmus+. It ran from 2014 and comes to a close this month. It aimed to explore and inform the connections between our cultural organisations and their communities by capitalising on the emergence of new and democratising digital technologies.

We have had the great pleasure of taking part in their events over the past three years. It was great to find museum community so open and willing to meet the makers on their terms especially the Chester Beatty Library staff.  Events have ranged from talks, workshops and conferences.  It has not been just a one way street, we have had museum staff come to Science Hack Day Dublin and jump right in.  Tog has hosted events for the project such as Projection Mapping and we even had out members visit other project partners for workshops.

Project: Lasercut Fridge Magnets

Its been a while since this blog had some laser-cut goodness. This latest project is to create fridge magnets for a members event.  The design uses the Alpha Thin font and features a person holding some fire poi.  

After the cutting them all out of 3mm Birch Plywood, we marred them to magnets to with some glue.

 

We used Dry Erase White Magnetic Strip Roll, as we had it on hand. To glue them together  we used our new favorite glue, Mitre Fast Adhesive.

Dublin Maker 2017 Open Call

Summer is coming, that means our favorite event is only months away. Dublin Maker is community run event, which will be held on Saturday July 22nd, 2017 in Merrion Square, Dublin.  It takes the form of a festival style showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning. Now is your chance to take part, they have a call for all sorts of projects and ideas on their website.
