Irish Hackerspace Week 2012: Night of Short Talks

As part of Irish Hackerspaces Week we are running a Night of Short Talks in TOG on Thursday 20th Septempter 2012 kicking off at 7:30pm. This is an event we should do more often as we always get a great varity of topics from some great speakers. Here is a list of talks in no particular order (order decided closer to the time) :

Colm will discuss Ditch Medicine
Treating genuine life or death injuries without fancy pants show off shiny toys, like bandages.

Chebe will give us An Introduction to ZigBee, XBees, and their Security.
ZigBee is a wireless radio frequency protocol developed to suit the need for large mesh networks of sensors or actuators. XBees are affordable ZigBee devices made by Digi that are often used with Arduinos. We’ll take a look at why you’d want them, how they work, and what security features are available as a hobbyist.

Namit will talk about a topic that always lights up everyones eyes, Fire.
Everyone loves to play with fire. Come along to this talk and you might even get to play with some.
We will go through the top 10 things you can do with simple household materials and a few projects we have been working on in TOG.
We will teach you things things you never knew about fire with a very interactive and entertaining discussion.
You might even have some fun.

Claudio Pisa will discuss Wireless Community Networks built by end users.
Claudio is a ph.d student in telecommunications engineering and a member of ninux.org, a wireless community network in Rome, Italy. Wireless community networks are built by end users to interconnect among themselves, without any intermediary and with no central ownership or management. Let’s take a look at the situation in Europe.

Jules will discuss Garden Hacking.

Rose will reveal the dark and terrible secrets of ducks.

Dan will discuss RFID, how they have become more of an every day thing, as well as some of his recent trials of some of the latest hacks.

Irish Hackerspace Week 2012

This year Irish Hackerspaces Week falls between September 15th – 23rd. This gives hackerspaces around Ireland a chance to expand their reach in to the local community.

TOG has already started to get events ready for this week. Sept 15th and 16th is the Synchronous Hackathon weekend which is a great weekend to get people aware of that can happen in a hackerspace. Our usual Open Social is on the 15th to kick off the whole weekend. We also have a yearly quiz on the last weekend ( Saturday 22nd ), and get all the hackerspaces together via audio/video link with questions dished out by our very own TOG Quiz Master.

Apart from those weekend activities, during the week we are planning electronics and craft activities, a night of short talks on various topics and a Gastro Night, discussing food science and beer brewing 🙂

As the calendar for this week comes together we will be posting a schedule for all to see.

Watch this space.

Lockpicking a great success

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at lockpicking last night in TOG.

I started off the night with an introduction into the different tools and locks available, as will as some ideas of what I would like the lockpicking group to do. We had 21 people in attendance! I couldn’t believe it. It was evident by me running out of picks for everyone. Thanks for understanding.

Sean uploaded some videos of the night here: http://vimeo.com/groups/142714

See you in two weeks  for the next session. We will be doing this every 2nd Tuesday. I will have more tools for everyone by then 🙂

Lockpicking Reborn :)

Back due to popular demand, Lockpicking Group shall reform to meet on a bi-weekly basis starting from Tuesday 22nd May 2012 from 7:30pm.

I will kick it all off with my presentation on lockpicking, going through the different types of tools and locks. Then after we will take out the box of locks and get our hands dirty, and (hopefully) pick some locks.

Beginners welcome, locks and tools are supplied.

This event is open to the public and FREE. No booking required.
