Privacy Security Talk in TOG – 22nd April @ 7pm – FREE

Dublin is lucky enough to have great speakers pass through town on occasion and on Wednesday the 22nd April 2015, Runa A. Sandvik (@runasand) and Per Thorsheim (@thorsheim) have kindly offered to speak in TOG from 7pm. The format for the evening is a general meet and greet, but both speakers have offered to give a presentation on a topic of their choice.

Anyone one interested in privacy, security, journalism, Tor and/or has previously attended a CryptoParty would be wise to attend. Doors are from 7pm and bring any projects with you you would like to share with other attendees. This is a free event, open to the public and no need to book. See you Wednesday.

Runa A. Sandvik is an independent privacy and security researcher, working at the intersection of technology, law and policy. She contributes to The Tor Project, writes for Forbes, and is a technical advisor to both the Freedom of the Press Foundation and the TrueCrypt Audit project.

Per Thorsheim as founder/organizer of PasswordsCon.org, his topic of choice is of course passwords, but in a much bigger context than most people imagine. Passwords, pins, biometrics, 2-factor authentication, security/usability and all the way into surveillance and protecting your health, kids and life itself. πŸ˜‰

Love Locks on Ha’penny Bridge

IMG_20150220_080018_800x600The TOG Lockpicking Group were in the press a few times over the last few weeks. Mainly over the Love Locks removal from the Ha’penny Bridge. At first we got some mixed responses from family members and colleagues but eventually we got them to see us as helping the bridge and not destroyers of love!

If you missed any of the coverage, a TOG member running the @LoveLockNoMore account documented the adventure.

It all started with a quick visit to the bridge to remove 8.7KG of locks:

Then of course Broadsheet.ie pick up on it:

Then the newspapers picked up on it:

Irish Examiner

The Sunday Times

The Hearld

The Irish Sun

We even managed to squeeze in a bit of run with a quiz :

Even getting into the Social Media Column in the Irish Examiner:

And what is the best result of it all? The Dublin City Council visited the bridge with their cutting tools, and cleared the bridge! I job well done if I do say so myself πŸ™‚

Love Locks No More

IMAG0803UPDATE: Everything needs a Twitter, right? @LockLockNoMoreOver the last few weeks a lot of people have been asking the lockpickers in TOG if we have looked at picking the locks off the Ha’penny Bridge. With recent discussion on Reddit and the Irish Times I thought it might be a good time to give it a go πŸ™‚

From looking at the bridge over the years, there is definite damage being done by people attaching their Love Locks to the bridge. Some countries welcome the Love Locks to their bridge but the Ha’penny bridge is not one of them. The Dublin City Council have to spend time and money removing these locks from the bridge. DCC did a big clear up a few weeks ago and they are slowly starting to creep back on.

CryptoParty – Friday 8th March 2013

CryptoParty Logo

TOG is very pleased to announce that we will be holding the 3rd Dublin CryptoParty. Doors will be open from 7pm, and aim for a 7:30pm start, on Friday the 8th March 2013, and we will stay open as long as people are happy to stay ( within reason ).

CryptoParty attendees request you to respect their privacy and refrain from taking pictures or video at this event.

The idea of a CryptoParty is to make everyone more aware of their own on-line privacy and security in this vast inter-connected world that we live in. On the night we have the following talks planned:(in no particular order)

  • Donnacha: Intro to Tor
  • Enoch: How Bitcoin works
  • Jester: Wireless Insecurities

Please check the Dublin CryptoParty Wiki for more details, and of course join their mailing list if you are so inclined.

GaelHack 2013

Some of you already know that members of the Irish Hackerspaces Community have been talking about running a Hacker / Maker Camp in Ireland, similar to other events like this such as EMF Camp last year in the UK.

GaelHack is to do just that! From 7th – 9th June 2013 hackers, geeks, scientists, engineers, artists, and crafters will meet in Mount Melleray Scout Center, near Cappoquin in Waterford. There they will hold workshops, talks, and be able to collaborate on projects to their hearts content, and hopefully well past their bed time.

At the moment early-bird tickets are just €80 and that includes camping/dorm accommodation, and basic food. What more would you want from a weekend? Well you can tell us, and join the mailing list to help in making GaelHack a great weekend.

Spread the good work on what we are trying to do. Website for the event is http://gaelhack.hackerspaces.ie
